Spring Landscaping Tasks to Tackle This Weekend

Spring is the perfect time to head outdoors and beautify your home’s landscaping. It is the ideal time to get into your spring cleaning mindset and perform some much-needed outdoor tasks. Plus, improving your landscaping will not only boost your home’s curb appeal but it can increase the property value as well.

To get your property ready for the summer months, here are a few spring landscaping tasks you should add to your to-do list this weekend.

Clear Out Your Flower Beds

Before you plant any flowers or shrubs, do the prep work. This will help your flowers thrive and it will give your flower beds a gorgeous, healthy appearance. As you work on these areas of your yard, remove debris, garbage, old leaves, and other unwanted elements that may be lingering in these areas. Consider adding some fresh soil and laying down mulch as well to help breathe new life into your flower beds.

Take Care of Weeds

Weeds can pop up all around your home. Not only will you find them in your planters but they may also appear between cracks in the driveway, large planters, in between gravel or landscaping rocks, etc. In areas where you plan to grow flowers, shrubs, and other plants, you will need to pick these weeds. However, for those areas between cement and rocks, you may consider using a weed killer.

Rake Up Dead Grass

If you want the grass around your home to be green and luscious, you need to start early. Using a rake, pull up all of the dead grass around your yard. This makes it easier for new growth to emerge and for your grass to green up. Pick up garbage, old leaves, pinecones, rocks, and other items that have gathered on your grass as well to improve the look of your lawn.

Aerate

Once your yard is clear from these unwanted elements, consider aerating. Aeration is when you puncture small holes in your grass. This allows air and soil to better access the roots of your grass, making it healthier and stronger. While you can use a pitchfork to complete this process, there are aeration machines that can make this process fast and that are available to rent at many equipment rental stores.

Reseed

After you have aerated, you may want to reseed. This is another simple task that can reap large results. When you reseed, you plant grass seed with your current grass. You do not remove your current grass. The purpose of reseeding is it prevents your grass from thinning out. It helps to thicken up your grass and gives it a more even and lush appearance.

Prevent Pests

Now that the weather is warming up, you will notice insects and various pests making their appearance. You will want to start early to keep these pests away from your home. Visit your local nursery or home improvement store to purchase bug spray. Choose a spray that will target many of the insects you see around your home. Follow all instructions to ensure you use the chemical correctly.

If pests are a problem around your property, it may be in your best interest to hire a professional.

Now is a great time to get to work and spruce up your Alpharetta home. What landscaping or home improvement tasks are you adding to your to-do list weekend?
